Trocadero - Pont d'Iena Athletics Race Walk

If the Eiffel Tower wanted to cross the River Seine to reach Trocadéro, it would take the Pont d’Iéna bridge. 155 metres long and 35 metres wide, Pont d’Iéna is one of Paris’ 37 bridges that cross the River Seine. Located at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, it will be part of an area dedicated to the Games in 2024, including the neighbouring Trocadéro live site. In 2024, Pont d’Iéna will offer an exceptional viewing platform and experience for spectators and television audiences for the triathlon, para-triathlon, road cycling, athletics (marathon and 20km race walk) and swimming (10km marathon swimming) events. Built between 1808 and 1814 by the engineer Lamandé, Pont d’Iéna is made up of five arches spanning 28 metres, in a circular arc, and four intermediary pillars. It connects Quai Branly, the Champ de Mars and the Eiffel Tower on the left bank to the Trocadéro gardens on the right bank. During the Games, Pont d’Iéna will be fully fitted out with overlay facilities making it possible to welcome spectators under the best conditions, while offering a unique experience for the athletes.

Olympic Athletics Race WalkSummer Olympics - Paris Olympic 2024

At the multi-sport event, race walking competitions have been held over a range of distances. The 2020 Summer Olympics featured three race walking competitions: a men's and a women's 20-kilometer walk, and a men's 50-kilometer walk. Only finals were conducted for the races. The first men's competitions took place in the 3500 m and 10-mile events at the 1908 London Olympics. At the 1912 Summer Olympics, a 10-kilometer version was introduced, and it was used until 1952. (skipping three editions from 1928 to 1936). In addition, a one-off 3000 m walk took place at the 1920 Olympics in Antwerp. In 1956, the 20 km walk for men became the accepted short distance for men, and it has remained thus ever since. With the exception of a brief period in 1976 when it was temporarily removed from the schedule, the longer men's event over 50 km has been held consistently since its debut at the 1932 Summer Olympics. In response, the IAAF staged a World Championship for the event, and it was later reinstated.
