Weightlifting, a test of sheer power and technique, has stood as a formidable discipline in the Olympic Games since its inaugural appearance in 1896. Athletes vie to hoist maximum weights in two distinct lifts: the snatch and the clean and jerk, symbolizing strength, determination, and record-shattering feats.

Weightlifting, a cornerstone of the Olympic Games since their inception in 1896, is set to return to the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics. This reinstatement follows significant reforms within the sport, ensuring its place in the Games and highlighting its enduring legacy and global appeal.

A Historic Return

Initially excluded from the LA 2028 program due to concerns over doping and governance issues, weightlifting's inclusion was reinstated in October 2023. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognized the sport's commitment to reform, particularly under the leadership of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) President Mohammed Jalood. Key to this decision were the IWF's efforts to delegate anti-doping management to the International Testing Agency and sanctioning to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, ensuring greater transparency and accountability.

Competition Format and Athlete Quotas

At LA 2028, weightlifting will feature 120 athletes, equally divided between men and women, competing across 10 bodyweight categories. While the IWF proposed expanding the number of categories to seven for each gender, the IOC maintained the current structure to accommodate the overall athlete quota for the Games.

The competition will consist of two lifts: the snatch and the clean and jerk. Each lifter has three attempts in each lift, with the best successful attempt in each being combined to determine the total score. The lifter with the highest total in their category wins the gold medal.

Weightlifting's global reach is evident in the diverse array of countries that have excelled in the sport. Nations such as China, Russia, and Iran have historically dominated the podiums, while countries like the United States, Colombia, and the Philippines have been making significant strides in recent years.

Notably, Hidilyn Diaz of the Philippines made history at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics by becoming the first Filipino to win an Olympic gold medal in weightlifting. Her achievement has inspired a new generation of athletes in Southeast Asia and beyond.

Venue and Audience Engagement

The weightlifting events at LA 2028 will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center, a venue known for hosting a variety of sporting events. The compact and intimate setting is expected to create an electrifying atmosphere, allowing fans to witness the athletes' feats of strength up close.

In line with the LA 2028 Organizing Committee's commitment to innovation and youth engagement, the Games will incorporate interactive technologies and social media platforms to enhance fan experience and participation. These initiatives aim to attract a younger audience and increase the sport's visibility globally.
