The Slovenia national football team made its UEFA European Championship debut in 2000 and is set for a second appearance in Euro 2024, marking a significant return to the continental stage.
In the Euro Cup 2000 qualifiers, Slovenia secured a commendable second-place finish in their group, trailing Norway but outperforming Greece, Latvia, Albania, and Georgia. The playoffs proved pivotal as they triumphed over Ukraine with a 3–2 aggregate score, earning their ticket to the finals held in Belgium and the Netherlands. Placed in Group C alongside Spain, Yugoslavia, and Norway, Slovenia's inaugural match against Yugoslavia saw them take a commanding 3–0 lead, only to settle for a 3–3 draw.
Despite a narrow loss to Spain in the second match and a goalless draw against Norway in the last game, Slovenia finished at the bottom of their group with two points. Zlatko Zahovic emerged as a key player, contributing three of the team's four goals in the tournament.
Following a 24-year hiatus from European Championship qualification, Slovenia secured their spot in Euro 2024 by finishing second in their group during the qualifiers. Denmark led the group, with Slovenia ahead of Finland, Kazakhstan, Northern Ireland, and San Marino.
Group H of UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying featured Denmark, Finland, Kazakhstan, Northern Ireland, San Marino, and Slovenia. The teams engaged in home-and-away round-robin matches, and the top two teams, Denmark and Slovenia, earned direct qualification for the final Euro 2024 tournament in Germany. This achievement marks a noteworthy chapter in Slovenia's football history, showcasing their resilience and return to the European stage.
