La Concorde - Breaking

Paris, France

Making its premiere in the Summer Olympic program, breaking, also known as breakdancing, will debut at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The event will feature two distinct medal competitions, one for men and one for women, showcasing the talents of 16 b-boys and 16 b-girls. Previously seen at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics, this addition aligns with IOC President Thomas Bach's vision to engage a younger audience in the Olympic movement.

Spearheaded by the World Dance Sport Federation, breaking will take center stage as athletes exhibit their prowess in electrifying solo battles, incorporating a diverse repertoire of moves like windmills, six-step footwork, and freezes, responding spontaneously to DJ tracks to earn the highest scores. Each breaker's points and rounds, judged against opponents, will determine their advancement until the inaugural Olympic-breaking champion emerges.

Set to unfold from August 9 to 10 at Place de la Concorde, the breaking competitions mark a historic milestone, becoming the first Dance Sport discipline to grace the Summer Olympic stage. Following its successful stint at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, breaking secures its place among the four additional sports approved for Paris 2024, joining skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing. With a total of 32 breakdancers engaging in intense one-on-one battles, Paris 2024 promises an exhilarating display of this vibrant and expressive urban art form.
