Flag football will make its Olympic debut at the LA 2028 Summer Games, marking a significant milestone in the sport's history. This non-contact, fast-paced version of American football is set to captivate audiences worldwide with its dynamic gameplay and inclusive nature.

Olympic Flag football is a non-contact variant of American football where players wear belts with flags attached. Instead of tackling, defenders aim to remove a flag from the ball carrier to end a play. The Olympic format will feature five-player teams on a 50-yard field, emphasizing speed and agility. Games consist of two 20-minute halves, with a running clock until the two-minute warning in each half. Teams have four downs to advance the ball, and scoring includes touchdowns worth six points, with options for extra points from the five or ten-yard line. In the event of a tie, a sudden-death overtime period will determine the winner.

Venue: BMO Stadium

Flag football competitions at LA28 will be held at BMO Stadium, a 22,000-seat venue located in Exposition Park, Los Angeles. Adjacent to the LA Memorial Coliseum, BMO Stadium is home to Major League Soccer's Los Angeles FC and the National Women's Soccer League's Angel City FC. The stadium's modern facilities and central location make it an ideal setting for the Olympic flag football events.

Flag football has experienced rapid growth globally, with over 20 million players in more than 100 countries. The sport's inclusion in the Olympics is expected to further accelerate its development and popularity. Nations such as Mexico, Italy, and Canada have established strong flag football programs, and their teams are anticipated to be competitive contenders at LA 2028.

The United States has been a dominant force in international flag football competitions. In the 2024 World Championships held in Finland, both the men's and women's teams secured gold medals, underscoring their prowess in the sport. The U.S. roster for LA 2028 is expected to feature a mix of elite athletes, including potential NFL stars. Notable players such as Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts have expressed interest in participating, adding excitement and star power to the Olympic team.

The Olympic flag football tournament will consist of six men's and six women's teams, each composed of 10 players. The competition will follow a round-robin format, with the top teams advancing to the semifinals and finals. The men's final is scheduled for July 28, 2028, and the women's final on July 29, strategically placed to avoid conflicts with athletics events.

The inclusion of flag football in the Olympics is expected to inspire a new generation of athletes and fans. The sport's emphasis on teamwork, strategy, and inclusivity aligns with the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect. As the Games approach, anticipation builds for the debut of flag football on the world stage, promising to deliver thrilling competition and lasting memories.
