Handball has evolved into one of the most dynamic and thrilling team sports on the Olympic program. At the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics, the sport will continue to captivate audiences with its fast-paced action, strategic depth, and rich history.

A Storied Olympic History

Handball made its Olympic debut at the 1936 Berlin Games as an outdoor field sport with 11 players per side. Germany clinched the first Olympic gold medal in handball, defeating Austria in the final. However, the sport was removed from the Olympic program after that single appearance. In 1972, handball returned to the Olympics in its current indoor format, with seven players per side, at the Munich Games. Yugoslavia won the inaugural Olympic gold in this new format. The women's competition was introduced in 1976 at the Montreal Games, with the Soviet Union securing the first gold medal in women's handball.

Handball's Olympic Journey in the U.S.

The United States has had a limited presence in Olympic handball history. The U.S. men's team participated in the 1936 Berlin Games but did not medal. Since then, the U.S. has not qualified for Olympic handball competitions. However, the sport has a growing grassroots presence in the country, with increasing youth participation and development programs aimed at elevating the level of play.

Global Powerhouses and Rivalries

Over the decades, several nations have emerged as dominant forces in Olympic handball:

✔France: The French men's team has been particularly successful, securing Olympic gold medals in 2008, 2012, and 2020. The women's team has also been formidable, winning gold in 2020.

✔Denmark: Denmark's men's team clinched gold in 2016 and 2024, showcasing their consistent excellence on the international stage.

✔Norway: The Norwegian women's team has been a dominant force, winning gold in 2008, 2012, and 2024, and is renowned for its tactical prowess and resilience.

These nations have cultivated intense rivalries, particularly between France and Denmark, which have met in multiple Olympic finals, adding to the drama and excitement of the sport.
The Olympic handball tournaments at LA 2028 will feature 12 teams each for men and women, competing in a round-robin group stage followed by knockout rounds. The matches will be held at the Staples Center, providing an intimate setting for fans to witness the high-speed action up close. The introduction of the mixed-gender event in 2028 aims to promote gender equality and showcase the versatility and teamwork inherent in the sport.

Handball's Global Reach

Handball enjoys immense popularity in Europe, particularly in countries like France, Denmark, Norway, and Germany. The sport is governed by the International Handball Federation (IHF), which oversees competitions such as the World Championships and continental championships. The IHF's initiatives have led to the establishment of handball academies and youth programs worldwide, fostering the development of future talent and expanding the sport's reach beyond its traditional strongholds.
